MONTGOMERY – Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform (ACCR) Chairman Thomas E. Corts announced plans today for an old-fashioned, statewide bus tour promoting constitutional reform before the upcoming November elections. ACCR’s yellow school bus, Reform One, will make its debut at a rally in the Black Belt community of Marion, Alabama on Oct. 16. The tour will culminate with a rally in Montgomery on November 4, 2002.

“We’re taking our message of reform directly to the people,” said Corts. “This bus tour is a great way for us to talk to citizens at the grassroots level about why we need to reform the constitution and about getting involved in the upcoming election. It’s important that citizens get involved and ask candidates where they are on reform and why. We are very excited and eager to hit the road with this rolling library of constitutional reform knowledge.”

The full-sized school bus will be decorated in part with drawings and slogans designed by Alabama students. Supporters for a new constitution will be invited to sign their names directly onto the school bus.

The bus tour will make stops in about 35 communities across the state in the next month. Event speakers and volunteers will ride aboard the bus carrying T-shirts, books, stickers, signs and other informative items on constitutional reform and Amendment No. 1. A detailed schedule of the bus tour can be found on ACCR’s website, www.constitutionalreform.org .

Amendment No. 1 requires that any new constitution, whether written by the Legislature or by a constitutional convention, must be approved in a statewide vote before it can be enacted.

“Passage of Amendment One on November 5th is non-controversial,” said Corts. “It is insurance that a new constitution would reflect the will of the people.”

The initial bus tour stop in Marion will occur at 10:30 a.m. at Judson College where a rally for constitutional reform and a barbeque lunch have been planned. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
