Resolution passed by Convention of Episcopal Diocese of Alabama,
March 1, 2003:
Comprehensive Tax Reform, Education Reform and Constitution Reform
Whereas resolutions
calling for comprehensive tax reform and a constitution convention
in the state of Alabama were overwhelmingly passed at the 170th
and 171st annual conventions
of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama; and
Whereas our concern for the poor, the
elderly, and children at risk, which is rooted in Holy Scripture
and in our Baptismal Covenant, continues to grow; and
Whereas the State of Alabama continues
to have a tax system that is among the most regressive
in the nation; and
Whereas
without addressing problems in our state constitution, any meaningful
effort
to rewrite Alabama's regressive tax system
and improve its educational system will be more difficult; and
Whereas meaningful
reform will not take place without active commitment of Alabama's
citizens;
Now therefore be it resolved that each parish in the Episcopal Diocese
of Alabama
be encouraged to take an active role in ensuring the enactment of
tax reform,
education reform, and constitution reform; and
Be it further resolved
that the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama will continue to partner
with members of all faiths in supporting tax,
education, and constitution reform; and
Be it further resolved
that parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama be encouraged
to take action by using the resources of Alabama Arise, A+, Voices
for Alabama's Children,
and Alabama Citizens for Constitution Reform to educate and motivate
their
parishioners to volunteer their time and efforts to help bring about
meaningful reform in the state of Alabama.
