RESOLUTION NO. 01-675



   WHEREAS, the Huntsville City Council recognizes that the mission of Alabama State government has greatly changed since the Alabama Constitution was written in 1901; and

   WHEREAS,
the 1901 Constitution inhibits responsive government at all levels; and

  
WHEREAS, the 1901 Constitution’s myriad defects have now been amended 706 times, bloating the document’s length to more than 315,000 words; and

  
WHEREAS, the 1901 Constitution’s highly restrictive language is an impediment to attracting good jobs and inspiring economic development; and

  
WHEREAS, the people of Alabama deserve the best government that they and their representatives can devise as our state enters the 21st century.

  
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Huntsville, Alabama, that the City Council does hereby endorse and give its full support to writing a modern state constitution, and that the Alabama Legislature is hereby requested to assign highest priority to this matter.

  
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Madison County Legislative Delegation Office.
