City of Marion, Alabama
.
Resolution in support of rewriting the Alabama Constitution

WHEREAS, the Marion City Council recognizes that the mission of Alabama State government
has greatly changed since the Alabama Constitution was written in 1901; and

WHEREAS, the Alabama Constitution represents a legacy of discrimination that detracts
from the diversity we practice today; and

WHEREAS, the 1901 Constitution inhibits responsive government at all levels; and

WHEREAS, the 1901 Constitution’s numerous defects have led to 713 amendments,
bloating the document’s length to more that
315,000 words; and

WHEREAS, the Alabama Constitution unduly limits the powers of local governments
by detracting from the authority and
responsibility of regularly elected officials; and

WHEREAS, the 1901 Constitution’s highly restrictive language is an impediment to attracting
good jobs and inspiring economic development; and

WHEREAS, the people of Alabama deserve the best government that they and
their representatives can devise as our state enters the 21st century.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Marion, Alabama,
that the City Council does hereby endorse and give its full support to writing
a modern state constitution, and that the Alabama Legislature is hereby
requested to assign highest priority to this matter.

Done, this the seventh day of October, in the year of our Lord, two thousand and two.

Edward Daniel, Mayor
