Update on the January 25, 2006 Rally

The Let the People Vote Rally, Jan 25th, 2006, was a rousing start for the call for a constitutional convention to rewrite the 1901 Constitution. House Speaker Seth Hammett welcomed all the people to participate in their government. The bills’ sponsors, Speaker Pro Tem Newton and Senator Ted Little encouraged everyone. The 65,000 signatures on the petitions presented to the Legislators, represent people who want their legislators to allow the people a chance to vote to have a constitutional convention.

Update on the Public Hearing for HB109 and SB52

The House Constitution and Elections Commiteee voted on Tuesday, February 15th on HB109 that would call for a constitutional convention. The Committee voted 7 to 7 which means that the Bill did not pass. We in ACCR wait to hear if additional action on the Bill will be taken by the Committee.

WE SHOULD FEEL OUTRAGE THAT SEVEN LEGISLATORS HAVE DENIED ALABAMA VOTERS A CHANCE TO VOTE. CALL THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE CONSTITUTION AND ELECTIONS COMMITTEE WHO VOTED "NO" AND DEMAND THAT THEY GIVE YOU YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE. AND BE SURE TO THANK THOSE WHO VOTED "YES."

And please call everyone you know today and ask them to call TODAY. Also, try to reach people in the districts of the NO votes and have them call. We must have the phones ringing off the hook in Montgomery TODAY and at their homes. Urge each no vote to reconsider this matter immediately. We need to unleash a firestorm TODAY. It is critical if we even hope to have the Senate Committee take us seriously next week. Remind them that over 67,000 people signed the petitions, and the new survey shows 71% of the registered voters of this state support a Convention of the people. They were all given the survey yesterday. NOW is the TIME.

Update on the Public Hearing on Senate Bill 52
More than 70 persons over-flowed the Public Hearing room of the Alabama State House on Tuesday, February 14th, to tell the Senate Constitution, Campaign Finance, Ethics and Elections Committee what they thought about SB52 that calls for a constitutional convention. Committee Chair, Wendell Mitchell alternated those who spoke for the Bill and those who spoke against it. Many wanted to speak, but the two-hour time slot ended before even half who wanted to speak, had a chance. Supporters of the Bill outnumbered opponents by more than 2 to 1. The petitions, containing more than 65,000 signatures, were presented to the Senate Committee as was done at the House Committee Public Hearing. Senator Mitchell said the Commitee would probably vote on the Bill next week. Begin calling your Senators and the members of the Committee and encourage them to support SB52. (Names listed below.)
